Sports Ministry

Introduction

One of the most effective ways of ministering and retaining youths in the church is through engaging them in sports activities. Most of the modern youths find church a boring place to be with most of them opting to go discos, take drugs and engage themselves in unorthodox activities.

The effect of such activities has led to drug addiction, alcoholism, gangsterism, premarital sex and many other vices we can think of causing the youths to be the most vulnerable group in the society. It is a common trend in Kenya to find jails filled up with young energetic men while most of the young girls are found in the streets doing prostitution.

It is true that the youths have strength and vitality, which if channeled towards the right activities can have a positive impact in their local communities. It is with these thoughts in mind that Nuru Lutheran Media ministry launched the sports ministry on August 2007. Every month, sports activities are held at NLMM compound, to train the youths on how to launch and maintain an effective Sports Ministry.

Objective

  1. Our objective is to empower youths to minister to other youths through sporting activities.
  2. Formation of youth fellowships in the Lutheran congregations.
Doctrinal Basis
Ecc 12: 1 “Remember your creator in the days of your youths...”
1 John 2:14b “I write to you young men because you are strong and the word of God lives in you...”

Strategy

  • Organizing various sports leagues
  • Initiating sports tournament and awarding trophies
  • Prepare a bible study curriculum to be used in the churches
  • Organizing sports clinic and inviting key note speakers
Results: We are very hopeful that with the above strategy we shall bring and retain hundreds of youths to the churches and hence making the church habitable place for the youth.

Conclusion: Sports ministry is a very practical, viable and effective ministry among the youths which has great potential of witnessing, discipleship, nurturing and counseling the youths even as they exploit their talents in sports.
